Free Fiction Friday – Alpha Spirit: Chapter Sixteen – Animal Instincts   Leave a comment

“Aren’t they beautiful?” Marcus whispered, staring raptly out through the windshield. The buck was a big, regal four-point, his antlers gleaming wet from the rain. After a moment, the does turned and bounded across the road, their white tails flashing. He followed more sedately, walking out of the light and into the darkness. After they were gone, Marcus drove on as though nothing had happened.

Shaken, I glanced over at him. “Beautiful? Is that all they were? You didn’t want to- to…”

“Hunt them?” Marcus said, finishing my thought.

Free Fiction Friday – Alpha Spirit: Chapter Fifteen – So Many Questions   Leave a comment

Standing in the barn, surrounded by a pack of wolves, I suddenly realized that I was in shock, my arms and legs leaden, my skin cold, and I couldn’t catch my breath. I could hear a wheezing sound and slowly realized that it was coming from me. Something touched my hand and I jerked back, looking down into the concerned amber eyes of the silver-gray wolf, his right foreleg still drawn up against his chest. He cocked his head to one side and let out a plaintive whine, then leaned toward me, touching his cold, wet nose to the back of my hand. I pulled away and stumbled back, my heart pounding in my ears.

The silver wolf glanced at the others, then sat down on his haunches and dissolved into a roiling cloud of black mist. I stared, watching as it drew together into a solid form, my mouth dropping open as Marcus appeared, taking a hesitant step toward me.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

“I…I’m…not sure…” I said, looking from him to the other wolves. “Did that really just happen?”

Moonlight Monday – 7/20/15   Leave a comment

Author’s Note: Happy Monday!

It’s so hot! Again! Don’t get me wrong, I like the summer, I like warm weather, but 99 degrees is simply unbearable. Forecast says it’s going to cool down a bit in the coming week, down to a more reasonable low 80s. I sure hope so.

Enjoy the chapter and I’ll see you in two weeks, on August 3rd!

“You see,” Darkness sneered, “he isn’t smart enough to be one of us.”

I ignored him, looking up at Marcus instead. “You didn’t tell me that I was a werewolf.”

“I thought you knew,” Marcus said. “That’s what having a spirit means.”

“Nobody told me that,” I said, struggling to keep my voice from rising hysterically. I couldn’t be a werewolf. It wasn’t possible. My mother was allergic to dogs. “I’m not a werewolf.”

“Yes, you are,” Marcus insisted.

“No, I’m not.”

Yes, you are, the spirit said.

“No, I’m not!” I shouted, my voice echoing in the silence that followed, and I shut my mouth, my gaze darting around as I remembered that no one could hear the voice by me. I expected them to stare at me like I was crazy, but most of them looked sympathetic, almost like they understood what I was going through. Darkness wasn’t one of them, of course.

Free Fiction Friday – Alpha Spirit: Chapter Thirteen – The Pack   Leave a comment

Marcus climbed out of the Jeep and I reluctantly followed, hunching my shoulders against the cold, wet wind that swirled through the clearing, making the nearby trees rattle and groan. Gravel crunched underfoot as we approached the barn, the big, main doors standing open wide enough to allow us through. It was warm inside and smelled of old straw and some kind of musky animal scent, like a wet dog. A few chairs and some ragged bales of hay had been set up in the middle of the barn, and I froze at the sight of the people seated upon them, waiting. They looked like normal people, in jeans and sweatshirts, one old woman with a crochet shawl around her thin shoulders and her gray hair swept up in a tight bun on top of her head. The only thing unusual about them was that they were all staring at me.

Moonlight Monday – 7/6/15   Leave a comment

Author’s Note: Happy Monday!

It’s so hot! And dry. I’m an Oregonian – we have webbed feet. I’m not used to 95+ degrees and more than a month without rain. Everything is so dry, our historic baseball stadium, due for renovation in a few months, caught fire and burned to the ground last week. We were terrified the fireworks would burn down half of the city, but luckily, most people were very safe and careful. I just wish it would rain. 😦

On a happier note, I feel good about Moonlight, even though I only have another short chapter this week. It’s been too hot to write. But I’ve been going over my outline and filling in gaps, adding details, and I like how the story is progressing. Soon, many of those unanswered questions will be answered. ^_^

See you in two weeks, on July 20th!

Free Fiction Friday – Alpha Spirit: Chapter Twelve – Awkward   Leave a comment

“You didn’t know?” Marcus asked. “Your spirit didn’t tell you?”

I shook my head, but suddenly I wasn’t so sure. “Maybe, sort of,” I said. “It told me a lot of things, most of which didn’t make any sense. It never said you were a werewolf.”

“He,” Marcus said.

“What?”

“Your spirit is a he, not an it.”

“Sorry, he never told me that, either,” I said. Silence yawned between us, awkward and filled with tension. “So…” I said finally. “You’re a werewolf. A werewolf.”

“Yeah,” Marcus said, raising his arms like he was going to cross them over his chest, but he had to stop because of the cast. He tucked the hand of his uninjured arm into his jacket pocket instead and let the broken one hang at his side. “What’s the problem? You can’t have the hots for a werewolf?”
